Since its establishment the department has been able to carry out land subdivisions at Davuilevu, Hunter Street(Flagstaff), Levuka and various other places, and has issued leases in those developed plots. The department is administering those leases for compliance of the lease condition, particularly the timely payment of land dues. The department has also put in place lawful mechanism for the collection of arrears of land dues.
We are continuing the administration of all leases with periodical (6 months) issue of rental statements and notices to ensure timely payments of annual rent. This process is still being done manually and the department is very anxious in converting this manual system to a computerized system to assist in the timely issue of statements and notices and at the same time gain easy access to our records.
There has not been any major development for the last ten years, only minor and/or isolated developments. Discussion is now on-going with Housing Authority, a leading land developer in Fiji, for the further development of the vacant balance of land at Davuilevu, sandwiched between the Housing Subdivision and the Agricultural Subdivision.
Furthermore, the majority of prime freehold land previously held by the Trustees of the Methodist Church in Fiji (administered by this Department) has now been transferred to the Methodist Church in Fiji Holding Trust.
The only major building development carried out by the department is the Rev. John Hunt House, which was completed in 2002 and the whole building is rented out to Government for twenty (20) years period from 2002
LEASEHOLD PROPERTIES OF THE CHURCH
There are numerous leasehold properties registered under the Trustees of the MCIF, located within various Circuits and Divisions - these are also being administered by the department.
With our present policy of 'User-pay Policy', Chief Stewards in respective Circuits, Divisions and other Institutions are urged to fully utilize these leasehold properties and more importantly, the timely payment of all land dues to respective landlords (tltb, Director of Lands, Housing Authority etc).
